I received the copy of GRAAL magazine at the end of April. I 've been thinking about the content of it since then.
The magazine is digging so deep into Japanese culture along with some topics which are not so familiar to most of Japanese though. The perception of Japan through GRAAL magazine has something different from that as a self portrait for me as a Japanese. It is so precious for me because it is "Japan which is seen from Ukraine".
The reason of this uneasy impression of the magazine as a whole to me may be due to the difference in the perception of "life" or "eternity".
In the Zen Buddhist doctrine, all living things are not "creatures" by some creator but only "living things" .
There are no "beginning" nor "judgement day" by this creator. After my body stop its function, my "life" may be reincarnated in some other human body or live a life as a dog or cat or a fly.
Thus all the living things are made equal.
Next coms the arms.
English word
means "upper limb of the body"
but it also means "weapons".
On the contrary,
Chinese character for "upper limb of the body"
never means "weapons", but it means "skills of a craftsman"
The difference may be derived from the difference between the commandments
of Buddhism and Judeo, Christian and Islam tradition.
Here is the the Commandments in Soto party of Zen:
You shall not kill.
You shall not steal.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not lie.
You shall not over drink.
You shall not urge.
You shall not praise yourself.
You shall not envy other's wealth.
You shall not be angry.
You shall not blame Buddha, Sutras and priests.
Is't they a little different in their orders?

昨年3月に水窪町西浦の田楽を見てきて、インターネットの写真ページに貼っておいた。すると暮にウクライナの雑誌社からメールが来て「新刊の雑誌で日本特集を編集しており、写真を使いたいので許可いただきたい。ついては高解像度のファイルを送ってくれんか。」とのことであった。
4月末に出来上がった雑誌が送られてきたのだが、パラパラとやってみて，「うーん。」と考え込んでしまった。読めないのだ。
日本では話の流れの中で、言わずもがなの微妙なニュアンスをきちんと受け取って「空気を読む」のが一人前である様だが、はるか大陸の向こう側のウクライナの空気を読む、というのは狭い島国で空気を読むのとは勝手が違う。
先ず「雑誌」の体裁が違う。大方の日本人同様、アメリカ文化に脳髄まで侵されている私は「雑誌」というので、米国式のペラペラの薄い紙に、全ページカラー印刷された物を想像しておったのだが、送られてきたのは全ページカラー印刷であるものの、分厚い紙に印刷されているので全体で2cm近くの厚さに達しており、それを金属ビスで止めてある。
案内を読むと発行部数1,000部とあり、しかも巻末には「全国の郵便局から雑誌番号99419でお申し込みください。」とある。そのくせインターネットで探してみてもこの出版社はホームページを作っていないらしいのだ。どうもウクライナの雑誌出版事情は読めない。
中をめくると。本文はキリル文字なので読めない。しかし英文併記なのでこちらは読むことが出来る。ニューヨーク在住のキタローさんなどと一緒にクレジットに名前が入っているのは気持ちがよい。合掌造り・石庭・生け花・鵜飼から四国巡礼・ニンジャ・アニメ・メドファッションと、まあ今時の雑誌の日本特集なのだが、どうも東方の島国に漂う空気とウクライナの空気は違うようである。
我々がウクライナを見ると、西欧とオイルマネーで軍事費を5倍にしてしまったロシアの板挟という土地柄だ。大統領が毒を盛られ、顔があばたになってしまったり、隣の国の秘密警察上がりの元大統領に、「ガス代を払わないからもう供給しない」とおどされてみたり、どちらかといえば暗い印象があるのだが、向うからこっちを見ても暗く見えるらしいのだ。
違和感の原因を探ってみると、私とウクライナの雑誌に出て来る日本では「生死観」がずれているのではないかというところに思い至った。
四国巡礼・忍者・日本刀と日本人は「死と隣り合わせに生きている」わけなのだが，彼の地の人から見ると，これが異様に暗く見えるらしいのだ。
この違いは、聖書と仏教の生死観の違い、と言っても良い様に思われる。仏教徒が持つ「輪廻」という発想が彼らには無い様なのだ。仏徒には「後生」があって、悪いことをすると犬や虫に生まれ変わったりするのだが、聖書では人間も人間以外の生き物も「創造主」がそれぞれそのように作ったものであって、死んでも人間がブタになることは無く、天国か地獄に行けばそれでオシマイ、ということであるらしい。
環境問題にしても我々はリサイクルという発想をするが、彼らは必ずやって来る「最後の審判の日」を引き延ばす-サステイナブル、という発想しか持ち合わせていない。
これに加えて聖書の戒律では「殺すな」は「第七戒」であって、「第一戒」から「第五戒」までは「私の神サマとあなたの神サマのどちらが偉いか」といったことを説いている。曹洞宗の十重禁戒では「篤く仏法僧を敬え」なんてのは第十戒であって、まあ付け足りみたいなものだ。
このため身体は何の為にあるかも、変わってしまう。日本語で「腕」と言えば「職人的技能」を指すのだが、英語で「arms」と言うと「武器」になってしまうのだ。2001年9月11日に世界貿易センタービルに突っ込んでしまったモハメド・アタ君以下の若者にとっても「私の神サマとあなたの神サマのどちらが偉いか」の方が人を殺すよりも重要な戒律なのだから、これでは戦争が無くならないわけだ。
