REGISTRATION of PREGNANCY . . .

When you're pregnant, it's important to register your pregnancy with your local ward office.

After the doctor confirms your pregnancy you will be given a certificate (generally after the 11th week) called 'ninshin todoke shomeisho' (妊娠届証明書) which then should be submitted to your local public health center (hoken-jo 保健所). You will then be given a Mother and Child Health Handbook or 'boshi-techo' (母子手帳) which is an important document used for recording details of your pregnancy and the health of the child after its birth.

This Maternity Handbook contains free coupons provided by the City for maternal check-ups and check-ups for your baby after its birth, as well as a number of other services available from the government such as immunization vaccinations, free health examinations during your pregnancy, infectious diseases testing, and delivery subsidies.

All foreign nationals regardless of nationality or residential status are able to receive the boshi-techo and you will not be asked to show your alien registation card. (However, if you do not have an alien registation card, you cannot use the above-mentioned coupons).

REGISTRATION AND IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES

  1. After the birth of your child you will receive a birth certificate (shussei-shomesho 出征証明書) from your doctor.
  2. Submit the birth certificate to your local ward office along with a 'notification of birth' (shussei todoke 出生届).

***This should be done by either of the child's parents (within fourteen days of the birth).

  3. The ward office (or City Hall if you live outside Nagoya) will issue a 'Receipt of Registration' (shussei todoke zumi-shomeisho 出生届済証明書).
  4. Sumit the Receipt of Registration to your embassy.

***Documents to register your baby's birth may differ between embassies so please be sure to confirm all necessary paperwork beforehand.

***Don't forget to report the birth of your child to your embassy, failure to do so may deny the child of his/her right to nationality (depending on the laws of your country).

All foreign nationals, regardless of status of residence should receive a birth certificate and 'proof of birth notification' (shussei todoke juri-shomeisho 出生届受理証明書) from their ward office or city hall. It is also necessary to obtain a visa and an alien registration card for your child. You must apply to the immigration authorities for a visa within 30 days after the birth of your child and then apply for alien registration within 60 days after the birth of your child.
